Never wood have guessed !
When I was about five years old, a truck hit the corner of our barn. I hammered together the splintered pieces of trim and my parents let me proudly hang my abstract art on the side of that barn for years. (Thank you mom and dad for the early support of my creativity.)
When I was thirteen, I made a simple lamp in shop class. Black walnut with some routed stripes filled with maple. I loved it.
And that was pretty much it for me and wood. All my life I’ve been avidly, sporadically, spontaneously, playfully creating things. I’ve drawn things, printed things, made paintings, taken photographs, toyed with bronze casting, and even sculpted some stone. But I was just not interested in wood.
Until I was!
In 2023 I picked up some wood and decided to shape it. I started off with a few little abstract sculptures, and then began making vases. Now I can’t stop. I love making vases out of wood, and the possibilities are endless.
Every item I make is unique. I look to the grains of the wood to help guide me in shaping each piece. I view my time with these little creatures as conversation, and I never know just how or where they will lead me.
I hope you enjoy my vases as much as I enjoy making them.
